During this event, dental wear was discussed both from the point of view of the anthropologists and of the clinicians. Extended debate on these different but not mutually exclusive interpretations of dental wear were recently published in two separate articles in the Argentinian Journal of Biological Anthropology, by Andrea Cucina https://revistas.unlp.edu.ar/raab/article/view/15304 and by Miguel Assis and Alejandra Londoño https://revistas.unlp.edu.ar/raab/article/view/16597 .

We find these contributions inspiring and entertaining.

The editors of the Argentinian Journal of Biological Anthropology (Revista Argentina de Antropología Biológica, RAAB https://revistas.unlp.edu.ar/raab/index), Lumila P. Menéndez and Angelina García offered us the opportunity to publish the outcomes of our workshop in a dedicated Dossier entitled “Anthropology meets Dentistry in Central America: Education and Research in Oral Biology. The AnthropologyCA workshop” composed of an introduction and 5 articles, and retrievable under https://revistas.unlp.edu.ar/raab/issue/view/1050.

We hope this endeavor will inspire researchers and clinicians to work jointly for the advancement of oral health, especially for the benefit of disadvantaged human groups.

Dentistry by the rules of nature: the VieSID concepts

Abstract:
The stomatognathic system is crucial for the accomplishment of primary functions, including chewing and swallowing, speech, respiration and postural control and is implicated in the management of stress through bruxism. Prof. Rudolf Slavicek (Vienna, Austria; 1928 – 2022), one of the world-renown founders of modern gnathology developed his concepts for oral rehabilitation based on this awareness and the Vienna School of Interdisciplinary Dentistry – VieSID is dedicated to their promotion focusing both on education and research. Slavicek advanced dentistry both with theoretical notions and by implementing new diagnostic and therapeutic concepts, supported by instrumental and clinical-instrumental analyses. He thought that a thorough assessment of the clinical, functional and morphological aspects of the stomatognathic system is necessary before treatment planning, and an understanding of the occlusion according to the rules of nature is a prerequisite for individual treatment. In this contribution, we will provide an overview of the key points of Slavicek´s approach to occlusion medicine and will discuss why concepts for diagnosis and treatment should not be traded with standard (digital) solutions.

Individualized functional dentistry in the era of digital techniques

Abstract:
The management of complex cases with orofacial pain or dysfunction represents a challenge for dentists, while patients might find it difficult to access proper care. The strength of the approach of the Vienna School of Interdisciplinary Dentistry derives from three main concepts: first, comprehensive diagnostics including clinical, clinical-instrumental, instrumental and imaging analyses aimed to assess the clinical presentation, function and geometry of the stomatognathic system; second, therapeutic concepts for oral rehabilitation based on the individual’s occlusal and facial parameters; third, a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s treatment, to address the complexity of the stomatognathic system. The clinically controlled therapeutic position is meant to improve the oral functions including chewing, speech, bruxism, swallowing, and postural stabilization by correcting the occlusion, restoring orthopaedic balance in the temporomandibular joints and face, and eventually improving the patient’s aesthetics. Modern technologies including intraoral and laboratory scanners, printed models, CAD/CAM digital techniques can be well implemented in the workflow as long as the clinician is still in control of the treatment accuracy. In this presentation, I will show how these classic concepts can be successfully applied within modern dentistry. A study clinical case demonstrating the usefulness of the VieSID´ approach to individualized functional dentistry will be the basis for discussion.
