The course

The continuum 'Orthognatodontic clinical course' follows the orthodontic concept of Prof. Sadao Sato (Japan).

The masticatory system is a functional unit that is composed by: teeth, periodontium, temporomandibular joints, muscles, ligaments, soft tissues
(lip, tongue), salivary and neuromuscular systems.
All these components are directly involved in the maintenance of correct functions. The functions of the stomatognatic organ are numerous such as breathing, swallowing, phonation, mastication, aesthetics, posture and stress management.
Thus, it is easy to comprehend how these functions can together affect the entire human body from the soma to the psyche.

Despite of the presence of numerous simple cosmetics technics, we base our knowledge on more solid functional orthodontic principles. In fact, the mandibular adaptation, that occurs naturally in the human
evolution and that can be induced by orthodontic therapy, allows us to obtain stable results as etiological therapy as opposed to symptomatic. As a result, Prof. Slavicek and Prof. Sato state that the orthodontic therapy will often help to avoid the chances of surgical therapy which reflects in avoiding joint problems as a consequence.

The course will also thoroughly address the precocious diagnosis of malocclusions in the youth. In relation to this, we will be retracing periods of functional development till the adulthood stage. In addition to this, we will analyse all the devices used in the early stage of the treatment including their indications and limits according to the doctor speaker’ experiences and the national and international literature.

In the treatment of skeletal malocclusion there are important factors that need to be taken into consideration in the diagnostics and they are as follows:
- the inclination of the occlusal plane and
- the vertical posterior distance.

The diagnosis is based on a cephalometric analysis of Prof. Sato and Prof. Slavicek other than medical, functional and instrumental analysis (condilography, clinical functional analisis, casts mounted on articulator etc.).
According to this, Prof. Sato has developed the use of the Multiloop-Edgewise-Arch-Wire (MEAW) with steel wire 16x22 or with gummental wire GEAW. When properly activated the use of these wires have led to satisfactory results in the process of correcting severe malocclusions and during the treatment of dysfunctional patients.

Students / participants are invited to present their own patient cases and even their patients in person for diagnostic examination, opinion and treatment planning from the instructors of the continuum.
